On 4 April 2024, the Italian government published the Interministerial Decree of 29 February 2024 in the Gazzetta Ufficiale, formally establishing the Italy Digital Nomad & Remote Worker Visa (“permesso di soggiorno per nomadi digitali e lavoratori da remoto”). This visa enables non‑EU citizens who work remotely to legally live and work in Italy for an extended period (renewable), without needing a traditional work permit (nulla osta)

Who can Apply to the Italy Digital Nomad Visa?

This Italy Digital Nomad Visa is for non‑EU citizens who perform a highly qualified job using technological tools that enable remote work — both as freelancers or as remote workers for foreign companies.
The decree defines the legal framework for entry and stay of citizens from outside the EU who will work remotely.

What are the Benefits?

The Italy Digital Nomad Visa Programme allows eligible non‑EU citizens to:
Live in Italy for up to 1 year (renewable)
Work remotely for an entity outside Italy or as a self‑employed professional
Bring close family members under family reunification rules
Travel visa‑free within the Schengen Area for short stays (90/180 days) once permitted

Annual Income to apply for the Italy Digital Nomad

To be able to apply for the Italy Digital Nomad Visa, you must demonstrate an annual income from lawful sources that is not less than 3 times the minimum level required for exemption from participation in public healthcare costs.
While the decree itself uses this relative benchmark (three times the healthcare exemption threshold), guidance interprets this threshold as around €28,000 per year in practice.

Is a Nulla Osta Needed?

The decree explicitly states that remote workers and digital nomads do not need a traditional Italian work permit (nulla osta) to come to Italy.
This simplifies the process significantly compared to other work visas that require employer‑sponsored approvals.

Are family Members allowed?

Under the decree, eligible digital nomads and remote workers are allowed to bring family members according to the standard immigration provisions:
Family members covered by Article 29, paragraphs 1(a) and 1(b) of the Immigration Law may join.
These family members receive a residence permit for family reasons with a duration matching that of the worker.
This means spouses and minor children can obtain permits to live in Italy alongside the visa holder.
