The Italy Digital Nomad Visa is a legal residence pathway for non‑EU citizens who work remotely using digital technologies. It allows highly qualified professionals to live in Italy while continuing to work for foreign employers or clients, without entering the Italian labour market.

The visa grants the right to reside in Italy, access healthcare and education, and travel freely within the Schengen Area. It is issued as a long‑stay visa and converted into a residence permit after arrival in Italy.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants may apply after two years of legal residence in Italy following the date of marriage, or three years from the date of marriage if residing abroad. These timeframes are reduced by half if the couple has minor children (biological or adopted). The marriage must be valid and registered with the relevant Italian municipality (Comune), and the couple must remain legally married and not separated or divorced at the time the application is approved.

Language Requirement

Applicants are required to demonstrate proficiency in the Italian language at a minimum B1 level under the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Certification must be issued by an approved institution recognized by the Italian authorities.

Application Process

Applications are submitted online through the Italian Ministry of the Interior portal and are reviewed by the competent authorities, either in Italy or through the relevant consulate if applying from abroad. The government conducts background and security checks, and applicants must provide legalized and translated civil and criminal records from their country or countries of residence. Processing times can extend up to 24 months, with a possible extension under current regulations.
